Sunday XI v Sunbury Squires (Away) 22-08-2010

Result: Blackheath won by 5 wickets

Blackheath - J Milton 65, P Melhuish 55*, T Melhuish 37*, B Hodges 3-40

Sunbury Squires - W Veerender 82, Griffiths 45*, M Serpant 3-55

A fine win on Sunday, with the Heathens reaching the target in the final over in fading light. Our hosts Sunbury were generous to a fault. First they kindly loaned us 3 fielders while we were waiting for our latecomers, stuck on the M25. Then their openers gifted us their wickets through the softest of dismissals. From a perilous 29-3, Sunbury’s recovery was built around 82 by Veerender, and given acceleration through big hitting by the captain, Griffiths. Our bowlers kept the total within range, Ben Hodges the pick of the attack with 3-40, while Tom Melhuish and debutant Alex Seeley bowled good spells. Our ground fielding was often brilliant, but we dropped 4 catches.

In reply Josh Milton (65) and Colin Parrott supplied the ideal foundation with an opening stand of 81. Needing 133 off the last 20 overs, we lost 3 wickets in 3 overs, before Pete Melhuish made the most of a couple of escapes to play a fine knock and bring us home in an perfectly-paced partnership with his brother Tom, completing the win with an unbeaten stand of 68.
