Saturday 1st XI v Alfold (Away) 21-08-2010

Result: Blackheath losing draw

Blackheath - M Chase 44, D McDermott 42 & 5-58, G Webb 3-39

Alfold - D Haygarth 39, T Pullen 30

On a miserable August day Alfold and Blackheath slugged it out in a very evenly contested game. Alfold lost the toss and were asked to bat in conditions that would normally be associated with late Autumn. The steady drizzle didn't help either side, but Blackheath appeared to adapt to the conditions better than the hosts and regularly took wickets, the damp outfield meant runs were hard to come by. Dallas McDermott bowled well taking 5 for 64 but after conceding two sixes over square leg to Darren Haygarth (39) he was replaced by Harry Giles who then proceded to concede 26 runs from 2 overs thanks to some fine tail end "slogging" from Daniel Taylor (20no) and Jack Lintott (15) who helped push the Alfold score from a below par 145 for 9 to a credible 180 all out.

Blackheath required 181 to win from 44 overs, a total that looked both challenging and achieveable and throughout their innings the balance of power fluctuated between both teams. Alfold started well having Blackheath at 16 for 2 but then regular partnerships pushed the score to 138 -8 at which stage Alfold felt they had the ascendancy and could push for the win. Blackheath had other ideas and with Terry Brockman (13no) dropping down the order due to injury and Dallas McDermott (42no) finding form with the bat maintained their charge for victory. Victory came for neither side, with Blackheath requiring eight off the final over to ensure a winning draw Alfold posted every fielder to the boundary ensuring they came away with the five points.

This game was a fine advert for I'Anson cricket, the only injustice was that Blackheath deserved the same number of points as Alfold and for the visitors the battle for promotion continues.
