The top of the table clash between Wrecclesham and Blackheath was always going to be an interesting match. Both teams have a reputation for playing positive cricket always looking for the win. Wrecclesham skipper Joe Bonniface won the toss and elected to bowl. Blackheath made a solid start taking the score to 132 for 2. Mike "No Need" CHASE was in exquisite form playing some beautiful off drives making 43 off just 37 balls before being bowled by BOARD. His batting partner Paul NASH continued his good form with an excellent 41 before being well caught by WINDEAT. SPOONER, who was expensive, then took 3 wickets taking BLACKHEATH TO 164 for 6. Tim SEEBOLD (24no) and Bobby LOWE (11no) then moved the score onto 201 for 6 off 45 overs with Blackheath skipper Dallas MCDERMOTT making a sporting declaration. C BOARD was the pick of the Wrecclesham bowlers taking 2 for 41 off 15 overs.Wrecclesham were in trouble early with top run scorer C SPOONER (11) being caught in slips after getting a very good ball from Clive "The Menace" ENNIS. ENNIS also dismissed BONNIFACE (12) and WRECCLESHAM were 37 for 2 after 10 overs. J WRIGHT batting at 3 then played a lovely innings making 60 off just 53 balls and together with the impressive BOARD (32) they took the score to 100 before BOARD was stumped well by BROCKMAN off the bowling of WEBB. Regular wickets then tumbled and Blackheath were well on top. WRECCLESHAM slumped to 138 for 8 and victory looked likely for Blackheath with 16 overs remaining. Wrecclesham's tail had other ideas and they continued to play their shots taking the score to 177 for 9 with 6 overs to go. BLACKHEATH had a couple of chances to win the match with one catch being spilt in gully and a caught and bowled chance to WEBB in the penultimate over just failed to stick. WRECCLESHAM needed 18 to win off the last over whilst BLACKHEATH were searching for the final wicket. A boundary and a wide that went for 4 runs off the first 2 balls made things interesting, but WRECCLESHAM ended 8 runs short on 194 for 9 off their 45 overs. WINDEAT (22no) and A COLLINS (7no) saw them safe. WEBB finished with 3 for 30 off 15 overs for BLACKHEATH and young gun "Pistol" Pete MELHUISH (16yrs) bowled extremely well taking 3 for 31 from his allotted 7 overs. ENNIS finishing with 3 for 71 off 13 overs and keeper Terry BROCKMAN taking 5 dismissals (3 caught & 2 stumpings).
