Saturday 1st XI v Lurgashall (Home) 03-07-2010

Result: Blackheath winning draw batting first

Blackheath - P Nash 67*, B Lowe 50

Lurgashall - S Evans 63, A Wadey 50

After last weeks first loss in 35 matches, Blackheath 1st XI were looking to put in a good performance against Lurgashall, which they did. Winning the toss Blackheath batted first and got off to a slow but solid start (0 wicket for 9 off 9 overs). Opening pair Bobby LOWE and Terry BROCKMAN then steadily picked things up and when BROCKMAN fell for 29 Blackheath were on 49 for 1 off 18 overs. Mike CHASE (30) was looking solid, but unfortunately was involved in 2 runouts along the way which included himself. First was LOWE who reached 50 before being somewhat left stranded in the middle of the pitch and next was CHASE who got sent back by Paul NASH looking for two runs. John JENKINS (0) didn't trouble the scorer this week out LBW and Tim SEEBOLD (14) was looking good before unluckily being caught by a backstop. NASH, who was moving along nicely, was then joined by one of Blackheath's 16 year old colts, Pete MELHUISH. They both showed their class with NASH making 67no off just 42 balls and MELHUISH 37no off only 16 balls. Together they put on a partnership of 95 off only 7.3 overs with good clean hitting. Lurgashall's opening bowlers A EVANS and J BUCKMAN bowled well initially keeping for scoring rate down. P WHITE bowled with good pace taking 2 for 49 off 7 overs.

Blackheath started well in the field with Clive ENNIS removing opening bat Drew CLARKE for 8. CLARKE, who has been struggling for form this season, was looking good before trying to force one through the on side getting bowled. MELHUISH (0 for 19 off 7 overs) opened the bowling from the other end and bowled with good pace proving difficult for the Lurgashall batsmen to score off him. MELHUISH is certainly a potential star for the 1st team. Alex WADEY (50) and Scott EVANS (63) then put on a good partnership of 91 runs before Matt PAYNE uprooted WADEY'S stumps. CHASE then rolled back the years with a superb direct hit runout on J BONNET (8), which some would argue was the third run out he was responsible for on the day. SEEBOLD then bowled EVANS (63) and there was faint hope of a victory as Lurgshall were 147 for 4 with 9 overs to go. Young gun MELHUISH then got a run out to PAYNE and P WHITE (30) off 19 balls with some lusty hitting appeared to be Lurgashall's last hope of snatching a victory. At 170 for 6 with 7 overs to go Lurgashall shut up shop with the last 7 overs going for 0 runs.
