Result: Winning draw for Blackheath
Blackheath - B Lowe 70*, M Chase 51, P Nash 41*, G Webb 6-30
Frensham 2nd XI - S Grundy 35
Blackheath 1st XI earned themselves a comfortable winning draw against Frensham 2nd XI at The Heath in the first league game of the season on Saturday 24th April 2010.
Blackheath lost the toss and were asked to bat making 207 for 2 off 45 overs declared. Top scorer was Bobby LOWE who made a solid 70no and continued his good form from last year showing that at the ripe old age of 59 he still has what it takes. Mike "No Need" CHASE had a rather up and down day. He made an impressive 51 before being bowled playing some lovely lofted drives. Paul NASH showed his class with a majestic 41no off just 37 balls including a huge six over one of the Blackheath houses. Frensham used 7 bowlers with Giles CLAYTON-JONES finishing with the best figures of 1 for 20 off 6 overs.
Frensham made a slow but solid start with the bat before losing their first wicket with 59 runs on the board. They then lost their next 3 wickets without scoring and suddenly were 59 for 4. Dallas McDERMOTT playing his first game since snapping his achilles tendon coming off a short run and Graham "Spider" WEBB taking two wickets a piece. S GRUNDY batted well for Frensham playing very positively making 35 off just 24 balls before being stumped by BROCKMAN off the bowling of WEBB with a slightly quicker ball. Frensham then lost further wickets and were 99 for 8 with 13 overs to go. J EARL (28no) batting at number 8 for Frensham did well looking solid at the crease and also playing some nice shots. When Blackheath took the 9th wicket Frensham had moved to 132 with 5 overs to go. With Frensham trying to hold on for the draw it was going to be tight. With just over 2 overs to go the chance that NASH predicted fell to CHASE who was fielding at short cover. The Frensham skipper Giles CLAYTON-JONES pushed it in the air straight to CHASE and just as Blackheath were about to celebrate CHASE dropped a relatively easy catch. Frensham then held on for a losing draw. WEBB who was the joint leading wicket taker in the I'Anson league last year continued where he left off finishing with 6 for 30 off 16 overs and MCDERMOTT finished with 3 for 31 off 10 overs.
Thanks also goes to Harriet HALL for a fantastic cricket tea enjoyed by all!
